This was taken on Monday morning, after the vacant motel had burned on Saturday night. I've since found two newspaper articles about the fire.

The Willcox Fire, Willcox Rural Fire, and Sunsites Fire Departments all responded to a structure fire at 10:34 p.m. Saturday at the Desert Inn Motel, 704 S. Haskell Ave.

"The whole building was a total loss" due to the fire, which has a suspicious origin, said Jake Weaver, the city's director of public safety.

"The surrounding structures were saved," he said.

The Willcox Police and Cochise County Sheriff's Departments were also on scene.

No one was injured in the blaze, officials told the Range News Sunday morning.

Fire destroys Desert Inn: Vacant Willcox motel fire called "suspicious"

A cause has yet to be determined for a “suspicious” fire that destroyed a vacant Willcox motel.

Willcox Fire, Willcox Rural Fire, and Sunsites Fire Departments all responded to a structure fire at 10:34 p.m. Saturday at the Desert Inn Motel, 704 S. Haskell Ave.

The Willcox Police and Cochise County Sheriff's Departments were also on scene.

"The whole building was a total loss" due to the fire, which has a suspicious origin, said Jake Weaver, the city's director of public safety.

"The surrounding structures were saved," he said in a March 24 statement.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Weaver told the Range News that it took about 12 hours to put out the fire, “largely due to the fact that the fire had extended into a common attic space and spread throughout the attic.”

Incident command determined “that it was not worth unnecessarily risking the safety of responding fire fighters and opted to switch to a defensive posture and protect Fosters Sheet Metal, the old Apple Farm Restaurant, and a trailer park from exposure and involvement from radiant heat and embers from the affected structure,” he said Tuesday morning.

No cause has been determined yet, said Weaver, adding that the state inspector from Sierra Vista met with city staff yesterday, but the structure is currently too unsafe to enter.

Weaver said that the owner of the motel is Krishna Pal Singh of Tucson, and that from what he understands, Singh had no insurance on the building.

In the past year, Singh has been asked to “board up or secure the building because it was unsafe,” he said.

The police department contacted Singh twice by phone and the city’s Building Inspector Jeff Stoddard contacted him three times by phone and sent two letters, Weaver told the Range News.

“That makes about seven times people from the City contacted Mr. Singh in about one year,” he added.
