EMR Class 222 222001 Crossing the River Trent at Trent Junction

            East Midlands Railway Intercity 222001 is seen on the LMS Red Hill Bridge that crosses over the River Trent at Trent Junction with a St Pancras International to Derby service.

There are actually two bridges here that run parallel to one another, both built by the Midland Railway in the late 1890's. Behind the DMU is the Northern Portal of the Red Hill Tunnel and beyond that the now decommissioned cooling towers of Ratcliffe Power Station. The castellated design of the tunnel was a concession to the owner of Thrumpton Hall through which land the tunnel passed under. The line was originally the railway company’s Derby to Leicester connection, opened by the Midland Railway in 1840 with two lines but later extended to 4 in 1895 when the second bridge was built.
