Common Darter newly hatched - a photo on Flickriver

            Such excitement today, our first (that we watched) hatching of a dragonfly in our new garden pond. I found three casings but this is the only one we were able to observe. I was amazed that it took so long to dry out and fly away having observed it for over 4 hours, but then with a flutter it seemed to take flight. Minutes later it crash landed back into the pond. Pulling it out of the water I noticed the two top wings were still stuck together hence the poor inaugural flight. I gently pulled the wings apart and it settled on my hand to dry out yet again. After a few minutes I coaxed onto another stem of grass for its final dry out!
