Striped fly - a photo on Flickriver

Striped fly

Sounding a little like a bee, there were dozens of these Native Drone flies (Eristalinus punctulatus) hanging about on the cool side of the house on a very warm evening. Como NSW Australia, February 2011.

There is something very interesting about the eyes of these guys which the camera doesn't pick up. Looking closely at them with the naked eye, a tiny dark spot appears near the middle of its eye, which moves as you do. I'm guessing its eye is made up of lots of rods whose ends are the surface of its eye. When I look at its eye, I am looking directly down some rods that are pointing directly at me, which makes them appear dark (looking into the abyss), while the rest of the rods which are not pointing directly at me have a lighter colour.

I'm not sure why the camera doesn't see the effect, even with a very sharp photo like that of Jean's, or a photo stack like Mike's.
