Palace of Westminster - a photo on Flickriver

            This is an anonymously published postcard printed in France from about 1912. The view shows from the left Westminster Hall, St. Stephen's entrance and the House of Lords together with the Victoria Tower. There is a Cannon Row Police Constable standing by an area of the Palace which was known as the "pit". This is an area which was exposed when the old Law Courts were demolished in the early 1880s. The demolition exposed the west wall of Westminster Hall which was in a very dilapidated state so it was decided to cover the west wall with an appropriate screen. To this end several screens in various designs were erected in wood and plaster and the design shown was chosen and erected in brick and stone. The "pit" was picked in 1899 for the site of the statue of Oliver Cromwell which is just out of shot to the left in this photograph.
