Hyde Park - a photo on Flickriver

Hyde Park

            This is a postcard published by Lilywhite Ltd and although posted to France in August 1924 the photograph dates from before WW1 probably about 1910. The view is of the Serpentine Road looking west towards the Royal Humane Society receiving house which can be seen through the trees centre left, the Serpentine is on the extreme left. The photograph was taken during a meeting of the Coaching Club or Four in hand Club which were a highlight of the London Season during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Each club had two meets a year, one before Ascot week and the other before Goodwood. Most of the members were aristocratic and were judged on the turnout of their mostly Landaus and Broughams. They assembled at the Magazine near the Serpentine Bridge and paraded along the north side of the Serpentine, then called Lady's mile and left the park at Queen's Gate en route for either Hurlingham or Ranelagh.
