Yakovlev Yak-9U

            The Yakovlev Yak-9 was the final development of the fighter series leading back to the early-war Yak-1.  Building off the Yak-7 design, the Yak-9 was lighter and equipped with a more powerful engine, finally giving Russian fighter pilots parity with German late-model Messerschmitt Bf 109s and Focke-Wulf Fw 190s.  Though it was prone to engine fires, the Yak-9's maneuverability more than made up for its shortcomings.  It became the Soviet Union's most widely produced fighter of the war.  Below 13,000 feet, nothing could turn with it.  It was an excellent design that would also see service in the Korean War, though with poorly trained North Korean pilots that were no match for their American counterparts.  Yak-9s persisted in service until 1959 with some nations.

This Yak-9U is the Museum of Flight's example, the only Yak-9 on display outside of Europe.  It was found in Russia in 1992, restored, and flown to the US in 1996; it is also one of only four Yak-9s with its original instrumentation and engine.  The Yak-9U was essentially a hybrid of a Yak-3 and a Yak-9; the two were nearly indistinguishable.  It wears fairly typical late-war Russian camouflage of two shades of gray over light blue.
