Raspberry patch early morning 20160704-073317 C4

            This is a photo made of part of Susie's raspberry patch in her mountain garden near Riggins Idaho. The time was 7:33 AM when I arrived to help Susie and Melody with the picking. You can see there are lots of raspberries. Since Susie had taken the day before off from picking in observance of her Sabbath, we had a bountiful harvest this particular morning, breaking her daily picking record by scoring 38 pints picked in one day. Wow! There are a few reasons for getting amongst the raspberry canes early in the morning. Number one is that both the humans and the berries are fresh at the start of the day. Number two is that raspberry season is only a few weeks long. Number three is that the heat later in the day makes raspberries soft and difficult to pick without injuring them. There are probably other reasons for hitting the raspberry canes early in the morning, but that is enough for this city slicker. Raspberries need to be picked daily during the short harvesting season as new berries are ready each day; luckily they do not all ripen at the same time. On the left side of this photo you can see three red berries and five that had been previously been picked from the clump.
