Back at home in a dome - Eola, Illinois

            With things being what they are around here lately, my son felt some rail therapy was in order.  So in early November he bought a couple round trip tickets on the Illinois Zephyr from Quincy, Illinois to Chicago.  The real point of it all was that Amtrak's last dome car was making a limited run on this train.   It's a 1955 Budd full-length dome lounge, the former Great Northern Railway #1391, named Ocean View.  

It made for one heckuva long day.  We got up at 3:30 am so we could get to Quincy by train time, and didn't get back home till around 1 am the next day.  Yeah, these are the goofy things railfans do just to fit some train time into life! : )    

Some might think a dome is wasted here.  After all, this is not the Rocky Mountains or some gorgeous fall foliage tour.  But I enjoyed every mile of November brown in Illinois. It felt SO good to be sitting up there again, especially on this line, where I fell in love with trains from a VistaDome all those decades ago.  I loved having a chance to look out over the cars and the locomotive and still find a bit of pole line and a few of the last surviving old signal bridges with searchlights.
