Ђурђиц, Слава једне породице у СПЦ Р'дам 2018.

            ► █░▓    THE ANNUAL CELEBRATION of Saint George, great-martyr in Lydda (4th c.), is the particular patron of the family which prepared this bread, here circled in their hands during a dedicated consecration. Later, it shall be shared with the guests in a busy merry domestic get-together.  This tradition called SLAVA (roughly translated 'glorification'), is as ancient as the collective christening in the middle ages. It is being carried on throughout the centuries by many generations of a particular family (or tribe, earlier). Sharing a particular patron saint nowadays can in some cases even indicate a common origin of the families, as in some areas preserving the genealogy records, they can historically trace down the line of descent using Slava.

ꒌ  A distinct and uniquely Serbian custom this Slava, which other local orthodox churches don't practice or know of whatsoever. It is held in higher esteem than birthdays or personal name days and is considered the domestic highlight of the year, along with the Easter and Christmas feasts which are shared by all church goers.

I have several shots of this episode, but only in this image I managed to get it the way I wanted. The little girl's face and look reflect how serious the children approach this crucial moment of mystically shared collective consciousness. It's the deepest communion of the broader family and their friends at its pinnacle - spiritually encompassing the time and space that divide them.

2025 update: This may well be my favourite picture in the whole collection. It has all that matters to me and that I love most (the nature & outdoors falling behind): √ the kids, √ the family, √ the spiritual family, √ the ethnic community, √ the faith, √ the roots, √ the cultural heritage, √ the good will, √ the unity, √ the feast. 

On the technical side: good colours which you can't take for granted when using Panasonic bodies in mixed lighting. Here my all-time favourite, the G80 (yes, flawed, the G90 and G9 are better, but are bigger and heavier too). Coupled with potentially the best and most useful MFT lens ever, were it not flawed by a slow AF and the lack of OIS: Lumix "pancake" 20mm f1.7 (here version I). And - last but not least - the nailed focus, something of a gamble when using this lens/body combination.
