Улаз у Via ferratu на Увитој Греди (2199 m) над Седлом (1907 m) - DURMITOR NATIONAL PARK

            HIGH UP ABOVE ŽABLJAK - The shortest way to reach the heart of Durmitor is the so-called Ringway, 82 km in length, which, when followed clockwise, gets you to Sedlo pass (1907 m) quickly by car. This one is the most frequented of the five passages in total that surpass 1900 m altitude on this incredible round trip. Most of the hikers actually start from Sedlo for their climb of the highest point of Durmitor (Bobotov kuk, 2522 m), leaving their vehicle on this high pass and saving themselves some elevation and distance. Not so long ago, before the old mulattiera had been advanced into asphalt road, everybody would start to climb from the other side, lake Crno jezero at an altitude of 1420 m. Most of those heading towards the highest peak region nowadays climb the steep first step of Uvita Greda (2199 m) and proceed. Doing so they leave its own fine top (to the right of the trail) unvisited. However, this minor summit is magnificently shaped itself and offers spectacular vistas in all directions. Recently a Via ferrata has been set up starting directly above the Sedlo. Both marked approaches of Uvita Greda summit do include some steep terrain with steel cabling and are not recommended for the inexperienced.

One of the first days of the summer 2017 saw the two of us there just before the sunset. My companion departed off the marked trail higher up towards the foot of Via ferrata, in order to find himself a better shooting angle. I had forgot a filter effect on my small Olympus camera and got him with this dramatic shot unplanned. 

As often, the result of a coincidence brought up something favorable: the relative size of the tiny man against the grandeur of the sheer mountain, here the lower flanks of Uvita Greda (2199 m). Symbolizing our futile craving to grasp the overwhelming universe by our limited senses. The quest to embrace and include it within our human scope is better suited to science, and - more than anything else - the poetry.
