Gasthuispoortje, stone from 1391. - a photo on Flickriver

            ► █░▓    BUILT IN THE SECOND HALF of XIV century, the St.Elisabeth gasthuis gate boasts a stone with the inscription year of 1391. The Gothic passage of profiled natural stone is somewhat newer that this stone suggests. Still it's intriguing to pass through, as your bowing will bring reflections on the centuries passed (unless you are very young and don't care).

THE OLD ARCHWAY must have gradually sunk in the sandy grounds, it's too low for an average Dutch grownup person today. Or were the people six centuries ago not as tall as today? I just barely fit under it, not as easy as this boy who will undoubtedly soon overgrow both me and the gate's size.

THE GATE IS one of the oldest medieval remnants in the town, if not the oldest. People used to reach the inside of the Gasthuis through this gate. At the rear end of the houses in the Gasthuisstraat, visible from this alley, one can still see that they originated in a medieval construction era.
