Historic core of town's graveyard - DURMITOR NATIONAL PARK

Црква Преображења Господњег на брду које се некад звало Пометеник (извор: Шибалић); данас месно гробље. И Црква и гробље подигнути су после чувене битке на Преображење 1862. године, у којој су Шаранци извојевали славну победу над надмоћнијом турском војском из "Тамног вилајета". То је још увек било време у којем је цео шири дурмиторски крај припадао Старој Херцеговини, пре него што је недуго после овог боја припојен радикално проширеној Црној Гори.

► █░▓    THIS HILL used to be called "Pometenik" (meaning where the weather is rough, or where it gets packed with snow). This name is rarely, if at all, heard nowadays among the residents, and most have never heard of it. The town's churchyard could well be of the highest elevation in the country (Crna Gora), or perhaps even in the Balkans. It boasts magnificent view over Durmitor's highest region, and the only major peak you don't get to see from there is Prutaš. Older generations knew unmistakably how to find unique, dedicated places for significant common purposes. And graveyards are perhaps the most special of all the places in everybody's existence. Both for the living and the deceased. No cynicism here, just the naked truth. No wonder the first group I choose for this image is !*ALL ARE WELCOME*!

As elsewhere in the Christian world, a church has been built among the graves for the services. Or you could also say, the graves were scattered and spread around the church. Both are built before this broader area had been annexed to а rapidly enlarged Crna Gora (Montenegro) in the last quarter of the XIX century. It used to belong to Old Herzegovina until then.

-At left the reddish Ski hotel's back side. To the right behind the church the local parish seat. An idiosyncrasy of this churchyard are the numerous graves with a communist symbol, five-pointed star next to the other graves with the Cross. This region used to provide major and most loyal support to Tito's communist rule in former Yugoslavia. 

My standpoint here offers an unusual view over the hill and was the reason for me to photograph it from here. The end of the day in snow-free December provided murky atmosphere we're used to ascribe to cemeteries at large.
