► █░▓    VIEW FROM KORTE BRUG (the short bridge). Further away behind the canal junction lies the Concordiabrug (bridge). The Merwedekanaal then leads to Lek river some 25 km further north. 

The impressive system of canals, rivers, locks and junctions is extremely complex and elaborate in the Netherlands. Apart from the ship navigation (waterway traffic, passage), its main purpose is a sophisticated management of high water threats which occur periodically.
