Playing Konik Horses - a photo on Flickriver

            The konik (Polish: konik polski) or Polish primitive horse is a small horse, a kind of semi-wild pony, originating in Poland and Belarus. The Polish word konik (plural koniki) is the diminutive of koń, the Polish word for horse. The withers height is about 1.32 meters.
As it is genetically very close to the extinct tarpan, the original European wild horse, it has been introduced into many nature reserves in the Netherlands such as the Oostvaardersplassen (60 km², about 1000 konik horses) and Meinerswijk (about 50 konik horses). The floodplain and nature reserve Meinerswijk (100 hectare) is situated south of the city of Arnhem along the river Rhine. The photos were taken there.

De konik is van oorsprong een in Polen en Wit-Rusland gehouden paardenras, dat klein van stuk en heel resistent is. Koń is Pools voor paard, konik (konjiek) voor paardje. 
De schofthoogte is ongeveer 1,32 meter.
Het konikpaard heeft geen verzorging nodig en kan het hele jaar vrij rondlopen. 
Om deze reden wordt het dier vaak ingezet voor begrazing in natuurgebieden. 
De konik is genetisch nauw verwant aan de uitgestorven tarpan, het oorspronkelijke Europese wilde paard. Ook daarom zijn koniks geïntroduceerd in veel natuurgebieden in Nederland, zoals de Oostvaardersplassen (60 km², circa 1000 koniks) en Meinerswijk (circa 50 koniks), een natuurgebied (100 hectare) in de uiterwaarden van de Rijn tussen de stadsdelen Arnhem Noord (Veluwe)en Arnhem Zuid (Betuwe).
