Ruston Prototype LM175 at BSL Ferbane. Lumcloon. Co. Offaly, Éire. 1991.

            Very pleased to find this locomotive and working when photographed in the summer of 1991. BnM locomotive no. LM175 marked a step change in locomotive provision to the Irish Turf Board (Bord na Móna) from the late 1950's. Ruston & Hornsby of Lincoln were the main supply to the turf railways of Ireland since BnM's inception in 1946 so it made sense to approach Ruston to have this locomotive built to BnM specifications rather than an off the shelf model built by Ruston's.
This Ruston (wks no. RH 420042/1958) was different in several respects being designed by BnM it was slightly heavier but a lot more powerful at 75hp and was built with an 0-4-0 wheel arrangement using coupling rods rather than the more common chain drive. It started life as a 0-4-0DH but has since had its Ruston 6YC engine replaced by a Ford engine and by this date was operating as an 0-4-0DM with mechanical transmission.

This locomotive was the forerunner to the very successful "Wagonmaster" design built by Hunslet from 1962 onward. After trials with this locomotive BnM built in 1961 a second prototype numbered LM176 in their own workshops along very similar lines to LM175 but the cab being the obvious difference as it was instantly recognizable to what became the Hunslet 'Wagonmaster'.

LM175 (RH 420042/1958) is seen here running light engine on the power station  loop sidings at BSL Ferbane near Lumcloon. The locomotive being allocated to Boora depot but out based here as the power station shunting pilot.
