Simplex 40SD507 & Ruston 466594 at Swinefleet Moss Peat Works, Goole, Humberside.

            One of the larger peat moss railways to be found in England was the 3ft gauge system south of Goole known as Swinefleet Peat Works being named after a small village 3 miles to the north on the banks of the River Ouse. Lines ran west from the packing mill onto the peat bogs of Goole Moors and south west onto Thorne Moors. When visited in 1990 Fisons Plc Horticultural Division ran the site and had an allocation of eight locomotives. Peat had been extracted from the same area since 1886 when Bennett's started commercial peat harvesting using horse drawn wagons before the arrival of diesel traction. The site changed hands several time after Fisons ownership with Levington's and Scott's also running the site before the mill closed in 2000 although peat was still brought in off the bogs to be taken by road for processing at Hatfield Works until 2005. The whole area is now derelict.
Of interest was the fact this peat railway had gone for 3ft gauge which was standard on the Irish peat bogs but most in Scotland and England were 2ft gauge.
4wDM no.S 11041 (Simplex 40SD507/1978) is seen with 4wDM no. S11210 (Ruston 466594/1961) buffered up behind in the works yard at Swinefleet parked up for the weekend.
