One mans pride and joy.... 30 years ago today.

            Under wraps with just the nose end showing 40 013 named 'Andania' is seen in Meadowhall Sidings, Rotherham. Its home for cosmetic restoration being the South Yorkshire Railway Preservation Society. The loco had been withdrawn by BR on 23/01/1985 but after some "tarting up" it then lead a twilight career for the next 3 years being exhibited at various railway events and depot open days. That came to an end when after a period stored it was moved from Tyseley Depot in May 1988 to Vic Berry's scrapyard at Leicester. Although not officially sold to Vic Berry's for scrap the locos fate looked inevitable having not worked for over 3 years. The loco was set aside possibly while paperwork caught up but a surprise reprieve then came in the latter part of 1988 when it was "acquired for display" at the SYRPS, Meadowhall. I am not sure if this was a sale or loan agreement between BR and the SYRPS but BR then moved the loco from Vic Berry's Leicester scrapyard to Sheffield Freight Terminal on 24/02/1989 where it was collected and taken to nearby Meadowhall Sidings home of the SYRPS. It languished here for 10 years before moving to Barrow Hill Depot under the control of Harry Needle Locomotives Ltd. Its subsequent resurrection to service has been a triumph against the odds as the locomotive has since been moved to Locomotive Services Ltd based at Crewe and mainline certified after an extensive overhaul.
