5540 at Trois Ponts, Belgium. 1995.

            5540 waits time at Trois Ponts on the one time 'Luxembourg Northern Railway' through the Ardennes Region of Eastern Belgium. This line was opened fully in 1867 linking Luxembourg in the south with the town of Spa in Belgium to the north. The station here at Trois Ponts (Three Bridges) became a junction station in 1890 when the heavily engineered Rivage to Trois Ponts line opened with five viaducts and nine tunnels in 35km length. Rivage was on the Liège to Marloie railway and this route was later to become the mainline to Luxembourg when in 1959 the section between Trois Ponts and Spa lost its passenger service as it passed through a largely sparse rural area and trains switched to the route via Rivage to Liège.
When I took this image Trois Ponts was still a junction as the first part of the route to Spa was shared with the Waimes-Stavelot  line which in turn linked onto the cross border Vennbahn route into Germany. The train in the background having used this route with a service from Raeren. Sadly this scenic line too has now closed and in 2010 was paved over as a long distance cycle route while the mainline through here has now been electrified displacing the Belgian class 55's.
