DEMU 205 029 approaching Leigh (Kent). 1993.

            With the advent of the Channel Tunnel and impending rail privatisation the Tonbridge to Redhill line was progressively electrified during 1993 with energisation from March 1994 and a full electric service from May 1994. In the couple of years prior to the switch over 3-car DEMU's were the primary stock on the line which was something of a full circle deployment as they had replaced steam on the line in the late 1950's but in turn had been replaced by Western Region DMU's from 1979. The Western Region DMU's were withdrawn from the route with the arrival of Networker Turbo class 165's in 1992. The timetable was recast with the arrival of the class 165's with a Reading-Redhill-Gatwick Airport service leaving the the Reigate-Redhill-Tonbridge section to revert to DEMU's for 3 years before EMU's took over.
In mid 1992 set 205 029 was restored to BR green as a Network South East "Heritage" liveried set. Sadly just over a year later from taking this picture on 15/10/1994 the unit was involved in a head on collision with set 205 018 near Cowden on the Uckfield to Oxted line and motor coach 60147 leading here was destroyed in the accident.
In happier times 205 029 is seen slowing to call at Leigh with the 10.53 Reigate to Tonbridge.
