10¼in Gauge 2-8-0PH no.278. Drayton Manor Park Railway. Fazeley, Tamworth. Staffordshire.

            Drayton Manor Family Fun Park near Tamworth had two 10¼in gauge lines one was an 850yd circuit beside the lake while the other was an end to end run of 450yds. The site belonged to the Bryan family who developed the theme park which first opened in 1951. Mr G. Bryan was the first to order what became the ubiquitous "Rio Grande" type 2-8-0PH steam outline locos built by Severn-Lamb Ltd and often referred to as the "Pretenders" being visually a steam loco but with a petrol engine. The original first loco designed by David Curwen was intended to be a "one off" for Mr Bryan built in 1971 by Severn-Lamb but was so successful the company went on to build 24 in total over a 16 year period for various miniature railways. Drayton Manor Park ordered a second loco of the same type in 1983. That loco is seen here in "Denver" station on the Drayton Manor Park Railway (works no. SL 14/5/83) The older example was used on the shorter Zoo Railway (see image below). The whole site has since been redeveloped as a rides based Theme Park with various roller coaster rides and in 2008 became home to the new "Thomas the Tank Engine Land" which replaced the original 10¼ inch gauge railways which were lifted and the equipment sold off.
