The winter of 1987, Maidstone West station, Kent.

            The 13th of January 1987 and the only train to reach Maidstone West on that day was this one. It had been the 05.15 Strood to Maidstone West but had failed long before reaching Maidstone due to the shoe fuses burning out with severe arcing in the snow. It had to be pushed through to Maidstone by the following train which was the late running newspaper and mail train 1U00 02.55 ex London Victoria worked by 73 133. On arrival at Maidstone West the vans were shunted to the old loco sidings and the class 73 re-attached to EMU 1581 to return as an unadvertised service all stations to Strood. The line then closed for the rest of the day as most signalmen couldn't get to work as most local roads were blocked and the night shift men were out of hours.
