Central London Railway entry in 1902 Post Office Telephone Directory for London

            From the 1902 London Telephone Directory the entry for the Central London Railway that had only opened to the public two years previously in 1900. It can be recognised as the first ‘modern’ electric tube Railway after the pioneering 1890 City & South London Railway; that said the line opened using locomotive haulage but this date was well on the way to changing over to Electrical multiple unit operation. The head office was based in the block above the surviving station building on the corner of Argyle St designed by their architect Harry Bell Measures. The depot, works and power station were at Wood Lane adjacent to the later White City station and now buried under the Westfield shopping centre.
