BTH Express Locomotives : advert issued by British Thomson-Houston Co. Ltd., Rugby, England : in The Locomotive Railway Carriage & Wagon Review, December 1958

            An unattributed artwork in an eye-catching advert issued by British Thomson-Houston, part of the Associated Electrical Industries Group that they grudgingly acknowledge in very small print! For many years AEI allowed their major subsidiaries BTH and Metropolitan Vickers to compete but by 1958 the writing for that was on the wall as AEI attempted to streamline their operations; by 1959 the locomotives were constructed and delivered by AEI Traction Division.

The advert shows an approximation of what was to become one of the class of British Railways AL1 AC electric locomotives, later Class 81, 25 of which were ordered from BTH for the first phase of the West Coast Main Line electrification from Lancashire to London Euston. Locomotive E3001 was handed over to BR in November 1959.
