Burnley Centenary 1861 - 1961 : County Borough of Burnley : official souvenir handbook : Burnley Corporation : 1961 : looking Eastwards

            To celebrate the centenary of the borough's incorporation in 1861 the Corporation published a souvenir handbook cgarting the history of the town, its services and amenities as well as its industries. As usual there is an interesting mix of facts, illustrations and advertisements for local companies and services. The handbook, unusually, was published and printed locally and not by one of the major companies who specialised in such 'borough' publications.

This grainy photograph shows the view eastwards through the town centre, a Thwaites pub and a couple of 'Joint' Committee buses. The Corporation had, in 1933, agreed to merge its transport underaking with those of neighbouring Colne and Nelson to form a long-lived "Joint" undertaking. The street lighting lantern is of interest; it is a Revo C.12122, a blended sodium lantern developed in 1947 for nearby Bolton Corporation at that had both sodium and tungsten lamps in. They were also used by Bury as well as here in Burnley.
