Tubular Steel Poles : catalogue section P ; second edition : Stewarts and Lloyds Ltd. : Glasgow, Birmingham & London : nd : c.1946 : base plates and pole bases

            A section of the catalogue of the major steel producer and manufacturer Stewarts & Lloyds. The Glasgow based company, formed by merger in 1903, had interests in Scotland, the Midlands and latterly in Northamptonshire through their major steelworks in Corby.

The catalogue contains many pages of data as to the use, specifications and availability of steel poles. The uses include transmission towers, tramway and trolleybus overhead construction and street lighting. Although the catalogue is undated it contains an inscription dated 1946; however the catalogue and the designs have an earlier 'feel' about them, particularly the tramway and street lighting sections that still contain examples of the more Edwardian scrollwork that was out of fashion for aesthetic and maintenance reasons.

Seen here are the designs of pole base plates, such as for use on bridges, as well as pole bases. These castings 'sat' around the base of the poles and added a mostly "aesthetic" appeal although some include a box for street lighting gear. Indeed, I can recall similar designs of base No.35 on Rochdale's pre-WW2 street lighting that were made by S&L or allied Bromford Tubes Ltd. The decorative bases were often, later, removed as they had a tendency to add to corrosion issues on poles.
