Traction Equipment for more efficient transport : advert issued by Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co. Ltd. : Trafford Park, Manchester, UK : in : International Railway Congress issue of the Railway Gazette 1954

            Metropolitan Vickers was one of the UK's largest manufacturers of heavy electrical equipment and were based at the massive Trafford Park works in Manchester, along with other works such as at Sheffield. The company's origins was in the 1899 foundation of the British Westinghouse concern, the UK subsidiary of the American firm. In 1917 a combination of the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Finance Company and Vickers, the armaments company, acquired the holding company and in 1919 after Vickers assumed effective control the name was formally changed to Metropolitan-Vickers. 

In 1928 they merged with rivals British Thomson-Houston and in 1929 the combined company was acquired by Associated Electrical Industries (AEI) who chose for many years to allow both concerns to trade and compete independently; several economic historians consider this decision to have partially set the scene for AEI's eventual demise in 1967. 

The advert shows six examples of elecric locomotives, electrical equipment in motor coach stock and diesel-electric locomotives; the last example being British Railways prototype gas turbine locomotive 18100. This, following on from GWR pre-nationalisation decision to consider such technology, was finally delivered in 1951. It ran until 1958 when it was returned, after withdrawal, to Metropolitan-Vickers for conversion to prototype 25kv AC electric locomotive E1000 (E2001 form the following year).
