            A rather splendid example of Victorian lithography and design; a c.1895 photographic album of scenes "Twixt the Humber and the Tweed" issued by the North Eastern Railway company and describing the scenic splendours of various counties their lines served. These inlcuded Northumberland, Cumberland, Westmoreland, Durham and Yorkshire. 

Although undated the text mentions the display of a seventy year old locomotive from the original Stockton and Darlington Railway of 1825 and that the NER acquired in 1863; this would suggest a date of c.1895. The album was produced for the NER by the famous colour printers based in Leeds of McCorquodale's and the printing certainly shows off their skills in photo-lithography as well as a very late-Victorian take on language and design. It was one of a number of publications issued by the NER to drum up tourist travel to the various areas their network served. This album has on the covers a splendidly lurid view of Bamborough Castle in Northumberland, one of the many attractions of this splendid section of coastline.

The NER was amalgamated with other railways in 1923 to form the London and North Eastern Railway. The company's line from Doncaster to Berwick on Tweed via York and Newcastle upon Tyne formed part of the important East Coast Main Line as shown on the map.
