            The Ashby-de-la-Zouch Canal opened, to help serve the growing local coalfields and giving a link to the Coventry Canal, in 1804 and was acquired by the Midland Railway in 1846. The northern section, from Moira to Snarestone, was severly affected by mining subsidence and this was progressively abandoned. Equally, like most other canals, useage declined dramatically during the Twentieth Century but by 1966 recreational interests led to the formation of the Ashby Canal Association and this ensured that the surviving southern section remained open for navigation. The Association, working closely with the County Council, began the process of looking towards the restoration of the closed, northern section.

This diagram is at a scale of one inch to the mile (given as Sheet 66, First Edition) and was produced by the Midland Railway in January 1893, shows the canal, the distances and the location of the various wharves and their owners. It is overlain with the local railway network. Some manuscript alterations have taken place; for example Higham-on-the-Hill station that was closed to passengers in 1931. Equally other, later wharves and owners have been added. This is the scan of the Northern section from Moira to Market Bosworth showing the canal through Measham Town Wharf, Ilott Wharf, Gopsall Wharf, Congerstone Wharf and Bosworth Wharf. It shows the railways as far east as Coalville, Bagworth and Desford.

This diagram has come to me by way of a little memorial to the recent death of Simon MIchael, bookseller in Otley, who sadly lost his battle with cancer earlier this year.
