            Stewarts & Lloyds were formed in 1903 from two earlier companies, Stewarts & Menzies based in Coatbridge, Scotland and Lloyd & Lloyd of Birmingham. The latter company already had ore mining interests and a production plant in Corby before the decision was taken by the company to build a new major works in the Northamptonshire town.

The Corby plant opened in 1933 to bring iron and steel production closer to the local iron ore fields. The plant was constructed in a remarkably short time in 1932/33 initially with 3 blast furnaces, a fourth added in 1936, feeding Bessemer converters until the early 1960s when production methods changed. The plant was always seen as highly productive but as costs rose, and local ore declined, steelmaking ceased here in 1980.

This fascinating small format brochure, 12cm square, is in a spiral wire bound format and uses coloured card with interleaved photographic 'negatives' printed on transparent paper and that show various activities from ore mining to production. The pages describe the various grades and types of pig and billet iron available, with their composition, as well as the sales of ganister and limestone from the company's extensive mines and quarries. Sadly there is no date, no designer nor printer given; it's a rather adventurous piece of design and uses Gill Sans typeface. It does not appear to be lacking an additional cover; I wonder if it formed part of a larger publicity pack or folder?
