A wake up call

            These chickens are absurdly short. People call them bantams.
They start crowing at five. Or maybe four. The time doesn’t matter.
Because once they decide the new day begins—then it begins.

Nobody asked for it.
Not me, not the couple in the room next door,
not the backpacker who stumbled in at 2 a.m.
But here we are, the entire guesthouse awake together.

We all step out of our rooms to see creatures the size of half a cat,
screaming at the world as if the sun had signed no agreement.

It’s democracy, in their own peculiar way.
One bantam crows,
and we are all drafted into the day.
