Hohengehren, Holderstein, cross marking the grave of the French cavalier

            Holderstein:
In the 13th century, a small fortifications was built near Hohengehren called Holderstein. It was probably used to protect and supervise the hunting ground. However, the fortification had been destroyed during German Peasants' War in 1525. Its stones were later used for house-construction in the village of Hohengehren. Nevertheless, some stone ruins and carved stones have remained.
Legend goes that during the Thirty Years' War the village of Hohengehren had to suffer by marauding French troops. Violence and starvation were widespread. One woman fled the village of Hohengehren with a loaf of bread downwards to the dense forest of the Holderstein were she hoped to be save. However, she was seen and pursued by a French cavalier. While the woman knew the paths and climbed down the gully, the horsemen and his horse fell and died. It is said that the horseman was buried under a rock marked with a cross.
