Stolac, scars of war - a photo on Flickriver

Stolac is one of the oldest cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The area has been settled for at least 15,000 years.

During the Bosnian War, the city was conquered by the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) in April 1992, Croats were driven out of the city. After Operation Lipanjske Zore or Operation Čagalj in June 1992, large parts of Herzegovina, including Stolac, were conquered by the Croats.

In 1993 in particular, there was fierce fighting between Bosniaks and Croats after the latter proclaimed their internationally unrecognized Republic of Herceg-Bosna. After the conquest of the city by the Hrvatsko vijeće obrane (HVO), its soldiers looted the city center and destroyed all the mosques, including the so-called Imperial Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The commanders imprisoned male Bosniaks and Serbs in prison camps, including the Dretelj camp, while women and children were deported. The Serbian Orthodox church was also destroyed.

In 2003 the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina designated Stolac Old Town as a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
