A Red Brick Arts and Crafts Style Villa - Ballarat

            Standing on a large block, this Reformist (Arts and Crafts) style Edwardian of red brick villa would have been built in the decade after Australian Federation in 1901.  

The villa has a predominant central gable which is a typical trait of the Arts and Crafts architectural movement in Australia, as is the fine masonry work in the stone treatment around the windows and the arched enclosed portico.  The villa makes a real feature out of the air vents that appear in the apex of the gable.  They appear almost like three windows because of their size and their stone encasement, which is the same as the windows below.  Its chimneys are stuccoed brick and feature red brick detailing.  Unlike its more stylised Queen Anne neighbours, this villa has no stained glass in any of its windows.   

Arts and Crafts houses challenged the formality of the mid and high Victorian styles that preceded it, and were often designed with uniquely angular floor plans.  

This style of house would have appealed to the merchant middle-classes of Ballarat whose money came from supporting the Nineteenth Century gold rush through commerce and industry well into the Twenthieth Century.  Comfortable and very English, it would have shown respectable and not inconsiderable wealth.
