Paddington, Scout and How Daisy-Maud Found Out!

PADDY: *Reading.* "She looked so beautiful in her charmed sleep, that the prince could not look away from her again, but he stooped and kissed her, when immediately..."

SCOUT: *Gasps.* "Oh! That's just like you and Benny, Daisy-Maud!"

DAISY-MAUD: "Blushes pink beneath mohair plush.* "Oh Scout! You are such a romantic in your sweet little bear heart."

SCOUT: "But it's true, Daisy-Maud! I know!" *Nods enthusiastically.*

PADDY: "What do you mean, Scout?"

SCOUT: *Turns to Paddy.* "Because I saw Daisy-Maud and Benny kiss at the fish and chip party at Mummy Marian's!" *Nods enthusiastically.* "They were sharing a chip. I saw them ki..." *Gasps and puts paws to mouth.*

DAISY-MAUD: "What did you just say, Scout?" *Blushes red beneath mohair plush.*

SCOUT: *Spins around to face Daisy-Maud.* "Who? Me?" *Innocent.* "Nothing, Daisy-Maud."

DAISY-MAUD: "That's not true, Scout!"

SCOUT: "Keep reading the story, Paddy! I want to know what happens next!" *Nods anxiously.*

PADDY: "Not quite yet, Scout."

DAISY-MAUD: "Scout, what did you say?"

SCOUT: "Well I..." *Blushes pink beneath woolen plush.* "I said I saw... saw you kiss Benny. You... you shared a chip and your lips met when you chewed it from either end and met in the middle." *Blushes red beneath woollen plush.*

DAISY-MAUD: "What?" *Surprised.* "How do you know about that?" *Shocked.*

PADDY: "Scout!"

SCOUT: "What?!?"

PADDY: "Were you spying on Daisy-Maud and Benny?"

SCOUT: "No!" *Defensive.*

PADDY: "Scout!" *Gives Scout a hard stare.*

SCOUT: *Meekly.* "Yes."

PADDY: "Scout!"

DAISY-MAUD: "Scout, how could you?"

SCOUT: "It was an... an accident. Mijn beste vriend Peter. You know mijn allerbeste vriend don't you Paddy and Daisy-Maud?"

PADDY and DAISY-MAUD: "Yes Scout! We know Peter!"

SCOUT: "Oh! Well, we were looking for somewhere to play hide-and-seek, and we just happened to see you, Daisy-Maud! It was an accident! Really it was!" *Nods enthusiastically.*

DAISY-MAUD: "Scout, that was a private moment between Benny and I." *Offended.* "You should have looked away."

SCOUT: "Well, we only saw you and Benny for a little bit, Daisy-Maud."

PADDY: "And why was that, Scout?"

SCOUT: "Because your beste vriend Oleg came and shooed us out of the bushes and took us away, Paddy!"

PADDY: "Well, I'm glad he did, Scout. It isn't nice to spy on other bears and snoop in other bears' business."

SCOUT: "Oh! I didn't mean to spy or snoop, Daisy-Maud! Really I didn't! It was an accident." *Nods seriously.* "I would never purposefully spy on you." *Contrite.*

DAISY-MAUD: "I should hope you wouldn't, Scout!"

PADDY: "You should apologise to Daisy-Maud, Scout."

SCOUT: *Looks earnestly at Paddy.* "Yes Paddy! You are right." *Turns back to Daisy-Maud.* "I'm sorry Daisy-Maud! I didn't mean to spy on you, and I certainly didn't mean to upset you." *Apologetic.*

DAISY-MAUD: "I know Scout."

SCOUT: "Please forgive me, Daisy-Maud. Please!" *Hopeful.*

DAISY-MAUD: "Well, I will forgive you, Scout, but only on one condition." *Lifts paw up.*

SCOUT: "Oh yes, Daisy-Maud!" *Relieved.* "I will do anything you say! I promise." *Nods seriously.*

DAISY-MAUD: "If you see something like that again, you must look away."

SCOUT: "Oh I will, Daisy-Maud! I promise!"

PADDY: "Very good, Scout."

SCOUT: "Then do you forgive me, Daisy-Maud?"

DAISY-MAUD: "Yes, I forgive you, Scout."

SCOUT: "Oh good!" *Relieved.* "Then may I have a big little bear hug, please?"

DAISY-MAUD: "Yes you may, Scout." *Gives Scout a big little bear hug.*

SCOUT: "Thank you, Daisy-Maud."

My bear Jago has made very good friends with a bear called Benny www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577200585... and his Mummy Marian Kloon (on and off) Jago and his best friend Benny are very similar. Benny recently finally plucked up the courage to ask Daisy-Maud to be his special lady bear. My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Daisy Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads that match her pretty sunhat, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her new Daddy.
