Paddington and Scout Being Safe Rather Than Sorry

            SCOUT:  *Talks to himself.*  “And you can go there little Easter Egg,”  *Places Easter Egg inside Little Red Riding Hood money box tin.*  “Oh, and you, you can go there little Easter Egg.”  Places another Easter Egg inside Little Red Riding Hood money box tin.*

PADDY:  “Hullo Scout!”

SCOUT:  *Jumps and screams in fright.*

PADDY:  *Jumps and screams in fright because Scout screams.*

SCOUT:  “Paddy!  Don’t sneak up on me like that!”  *Stomps paw.*  “You gave me such a fright!”

PADDY:  “Oh I’m sorry, Scout!  I didn’t mean to frighten you.”

SCOUT:  “That’s alright, Paddy.  Now where was I?”  *Looks around.*  “Oh yes!  You can go on top of that Easter Egg, little Easter Egg.” Places Easter Egg inside Little Red Riding Hood money box tin.*

PADDY:  “Err, what are you doing, Scout?”

SCOUT:  “Well, you know how generous the Easter Bunny was to everybear this year?”

PADDY:  “Oh yes I do, Scout!”  *Rubs tummy contentedly.*

SCOUT:  “Well, Rosie and I shared out special pink Easter Eggs with mijn beste vriend Peter, and sweet Aurora, but even with our grumbly tummies, there were too many pretty pink Easter Eggs for us to eat.  So, I am storing the left over pink Easter Eggs for later.”

PADDY:  “In your Little Red Riding Hood money box tin?”

SCOUT:  “Of course, Paddy!  Where could they possibly be safer than in my Little Red Riding Hood money box tin, Paddy?  All I have to do is turn the key to lock it, and turn the key again to unlock it.  That way they are safe from any unwanted attention.”

PADDY:  “Unwanted attention, Scout?”

SCOUT:  “Well, you know how we bears all have attacks of the grumbly tummies, Paddy.”

PADDY:  “I know, Scout, but I’m sure that nobear would ever want to take any of your pretty pink Easter Eggs without asking first.  Even if they had a grumbly tummy and no more Easter Eggs, Daddy always has lovely treats for us to eat.”

SCOUT:  “I know Paddy, but you never know who else could be lurking around.”  *Glances around.*

PADDY:  “I suppose so, Scout, although my left over Easter Eggs are sitting in a glass bowl on the dining table, and nobear has touched them, because everybear knows that they are mine.  I think they will be fine there.”

SCOUT:  “Well, you never know, Paddy.  Better to be safe, rather than sorry!”  *Nods seriously.*

Scout’s Little Red Riding Hood money box tin in the shape of a book has a hinged lid metal construction with working lock and key.  It features a pretty illustration of Little Red Riding Hood on cover.  It dates from the 1930s.
 
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago).  He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes.  The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt.  He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.  

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years.  He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend.  He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa.  His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House.  He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences.  Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
