This car started life as a Group 6 Ferrari 512S in 1970. Racing as a works entry in the World Endurance Championships, but never raced at Le Mans. In the Summer of 1970 it received a more powerful engine and completely revised bodywork, becoming a 512M. At its debut in the Zeltweg 1000km race it proved to be in a league of its own, easily outpacing the Porsche 917s, but was forced to retire with a broken alternator, giving up a two lap lead. A defeat that was avenged one month later.
With an iminate rule change for 1972, Ferrari abandoned the 512 project in favour of developing what was to be the successful 312PB 3 litre cars.
Chassis 1010 was given a bigger 7 litre engine and another new body in the style if the 312 PB style barchetta and the driveline and suspension were strengthened to handle the extra power of the 7 litre engine.
In this guise it was redesignated as the 712 to contest the Can-Am series, with the encourgement of North American Ferrari importer Luigi Chinetti Sr.
Despite lack of developement the car debuted in the hands of Mario Andretti, qualifying fifth ahead of the other European debutant the Porsche 917:10 and in eventful race in which Andretti lost a rear wing and spun, he still managed to bring the car home fourth. Seeing the need for further resources and developement cost Ferrari retired '1010 and almost a year later sold the car to Luigi Chinetti, who prepared it another shot at Watkins Glen.
It was raced twice for Chinetti's NART (North American Racing Team) team. In the hands of a young Jean Pierre Jarrier who suggested various changes to the aerodynamics to improve the handling. But they were no competition for Porsche who had been in continuous developement since their 1971 debut at Watkins Glen. Jarier finished tenth at 'The Glen' and fourth at Road America a month later. The huge twelve cylinder engine again lay dormant for a considerable time, before it made its final competitive appearance in 1974, again at Watkins Glen. Despite never having driven the 712 Brian Redman raced it from the back of the grid to a second place, before he retired with a failed suspension arm.
After a dozen races over five seasons 1010 was finally retired
Today, 1010 is restored to its works Can-Am configuration of 1971 and was raced for a brief period by David Franklin the European Ferrari Historic Challenge. It fittingly remains as the most successful of the 25 512 racers and also the largest engined Ferrari ever constructed.
Offered at the 2004 Monterey RM Auction, a bid of $ 1.4 million was below reserve and failed to sell, finding a new owner later that year
