The Essex Motor Company was founded in 1918 as a wholly owned subsiduary of Hudson. Producing primaryly small cars at affordable prices. Their products proved durable and in Motorsport competed in Trials and in 1923 an Essex Special driveen by Glen Schultz won the famous Pikes Peak Hillclimb.
Im 1922 Hudson dissolved the Essex car company and continues to produce Essex cars as a product of Hudson, between 1922 to 1933. The 1932 model was named Essex Terraplane a play on words for Airoplane, For the 1934 model year the Essex name was retired in favour of Terraplane.
In its time the Essex had proved popular with more than 1.13 million vehicles sold, in production Essex had leased the Studebaker plant in Detroit
