The SE6 generation of the Scimitar was more of a luxury model than the SE5 had been, and was promoted into the executive car market. Built as two door sporting estates and powered by a Ford V6 Essex 3.0ltr.. The wheelbase was increased by 4 inches and track by 3 inches over the previous model. The extra length was used to improve the rear passengers legroom and rear seat access.

The SE6A was introduced in 1976, with a number of changes still powered by the 3.0ltr. Ford V6 Essex engine, but with improved brakes, suspension and a number of other changes.

Ford stopped making the Essex engine in 1980, so the SE6B received the German built Ford Cologne 2.8ltr V6 instead. The engine provided similar power but less torque in the lower rev bands. and the final drive ratio was lowered to compensate. Reliant ceased production of the Scimitar in 1986, to be revived briefly by Middlebridge in 1988
