In March our family made a trip to Florida, to go to Disney and Kennedy Space Center. I have loved space travel all of my life, and was fascinated by the Space Shuttle while growing up. At the Kennedy Space Center they have an amazing museum, including a purpose built building to display the actual space shuttle Atlantis. Being so close to something that actually carried crews into orbit was amazing, and way better than I had anticipated. There have been very few times in recent years when I have been photographically overwhelmed by something. Such a powerful and iconic vehicle that has been a figurative part of my consciousness for years made for a difficult subject to know how to capture. I was also limited in traveling with a single lens (24-70) making composition a challenge.

This was my favourite photo of the day. I think it is powerful and unique, yet somehow recognizable as the shuttle without being immediately objoius that it's in a museum.

I don't know why it took me 8 months to post this on flickr. But when looking through my flickr stream to pick my favourite photo of 2016 for Studio 26, I realized this one was not yet posted, and that it is my fave for the year. Likely because of the my life long fascination with the subject matter, how proud I am of finding this unique angle with the lens flare working to make it look a bit like the thruster is starting up, and the fact that I just plain like it.
