a moment of grace

There is an inspiring scene from the movie "As Good as it Gets" that I want to share. A really great movie, by the way.
I was touched by the dialog of one character, Simon, an artist. He is talking to his model and explaining how he paints normal everyday people in everyday moments. Simon doesn't want to tell him how to pose but he wants the model to just be free to do whatever. The scene goes like this:

"I just watch until something strikes me...
You ever watch somebody who doesn't know you're watching?
An old woman on a bus, kids going to school or somebody just waiting.
and you see this flash come over them...
and you know it has nothing to do with anything external
-- that it's in response to a private thought they just had.
When you see it, they're just sort of realer, more alive...
and by noticing it so are you.
I mean... you look at someone long enough you discover their humanity."

When I heard that I thought, that describes perfectly what I feel, what I look for when shooting people, whether it be portraits, candids, or shooting anything really. Just watching for those special moments...you almost can't say what it is exactly, but you know it, when you see it. I saw that "flash" come over my daughter when we were outside this morning taking the dogs out. She was still a sleepyhead just listening to some music and as she walked toward me, head bowed, surrounded by light, I saw it...a glimpse of her humanity. A small moment of grace.
