            The West Window

The west window was designed in 1906 by Clayton and Bell, a prominent London-based firm.

‘The Tree of Jesse’ shows Christ’s genealogy.  Jesse himself sleeps at the foot, and branches rise from a central stem to illustrate some of his descendants, including David and Solomon.  The tree culminates at the top with Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus.

The firm was established in the 1850s by John Richard Clayton and Aldred Bell.  Their other work includes the great west window in Kings College Chapel, Cambridge.

Sir Robert Younger gave the window as a tribute to his parents.
