Boston Trinity Church Burne-Jones Women Detail adj IMG_8838

            A detail of women from the centre left of the 1883 large square E-window, in Chapel/baptistery of Boston Trinity Church, Copley Square - David Instructing Solomon for the Building of the Temple BJ 423-25. (The second Morris & Co window in this church.)

The aged David sits on a throne in the centre with the young Solomon kneeling at his feet. In the foreground four crouching scribes; to the left groups of women and to the right soldiers; above to the left and right angels with harps; right upper corner small figures carry Goliath’s head.

In the 1970s the cartoon was owned by the South African Museum of Cape Town, and on loan to the South African National Gallery. Sewter records information from Burne-Jones’s notebook, May 1882 “Great work of the preparation of the building of the Temple for Boston, a colonial city in America – This work may be said to be a culmination of my power – To culmination of power £150". 

The glass painter in 1883 was Bowman.
Sewter recorded the inscription in 1974, which is not by Morris & Co, and read: 
‘In Memory of George Minot Dexter 1800 – 1872.’
