BCD Holiday Destinations Show & Tell - Puzzlewood c500pc Tintern Abbey David P 5

At our Feb 2019 House Party a quick-witted meetings secretary thought to advertise the location of one of our upcoming meetings with two promotional jigsaws (left). Those of us who managed the journey to the Tintern venue for the June 2019 meeting (themed Rivers, Lakes, Canals) were rewarded by views like this from the hall's big windows. (The journey was fraught with diversions and not all those who set off with enthusiasm and determination actually made it that day!)

Right: David P used this beautiful 1930s poster for a commission to Heather Prydderch of Puzzlewood, who created this 3D-enhanced gem for him:
Puzzlewood c500pc Tintern Abbey, Wye Valley, Wales. 1930 GWR Railway poster designed by Frieda Lingstrom, specifically to promote Land Cruises to a USA audience, 200 printed. 3D-enhanced, cut in plywood with three levels by Heather in an interlocking style with earlet knobs.

Text from travelpostersonline: “Travel poster produced for the Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1930 to promote the railway's 'Land Cruises' to the American market. These were similar to todays package holidays, and the Wye Valley was one of the first destinations to be offered. Two hundred of these posters were printed and sent for display in the USA. The poster shows a view across the River Wye to the ruins of the abbey, with hills in the background. Artwork by Frieda Lingstrom, who studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and Heatherleys and was commisioned by the Norwegian and Swedish governments to do Scandinavian drawings for English travel propaganda. She designed posters and booklet covers for LNER and was known for her landscape paintings.”

1 Richard (‘Dick’) Sawbridge, for the British Library 441pc Fisherman Mending Nets, from a British Rail poster promoting travel to Hastings & St Leonard’s by Alan Durban (1903-1963). The jigsaw was never issued and was later sold in new condition by former Library owner Dave Cooper.

2 Holtzapffel 610pc Queen Mary by William McDowell, art from c1934. An aristocrat in Queen Mary liner jigsaws many of which used this painting. The material quality, line cutting and push fit centre within an and interlocking frame lifts it above other versions. It is a fairly large 610pc puzzle (27.5” x 15”), complete and in good condition.
