            Middleton Cheney 1865 East Window

The ‘Tribes of Israel’ window is an early work of the Firm, Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co, and many of the partners contributed elements to this window designed in 1864. Middleton Cheney has a superb set of Morris and Co windows, from both early and later periods. 

The photo is a large composite stitch of 14 different images, taken just after noon at two different exposures to even up light effects and ensure that the top and bottom halves can both be seen. It was produced for the Extremely Large Panoramas Group and is more than 10000 pixels high.

Cartoons in The Tribes of Israel Window

Tracery:
At the top of the tracery is Edward Burne-Jones’s ‘Adoration of the Lamb’.
The ‘Censing Angels’ are either by Webb or Morris and the central ‘Seraph with Folded Wings’ is by Philip Webb.
Webb also designed the 4 Beasts – symbols of the Evangelists Matthew (an angel), Mark (a lion), Luke (a bull) and John (an eagle).

The central panel:
The ‘Flags and Banners’ of the Tribes of Israel panels were designed by Philip Webb, whilst the figures of the Tribes of Israel are by Simeon Solomon. Most of the flags bear the names of tribes.

The two rows of figures, from left to right:
Adam with his apple and spade and Noah carrying a model of the Ark are by Ford Madox Brown.
Adam and Noah were designed in March 1864 (109) specifically for this window. Noah has subsequently been used at Cambridge (All Saints) 1866; Cardiff (Saint John's) 1869; Haywards Heath c.1868; Liverpool (Saint John's, Tuebrook) 1868; Madeley 1873; Meole Brace 1873; Tamworth 1874; Troutbeck 1873; Waterford (Herts.) 1874.

King David with his harp and Prophet Isaiah are by Simeon Solomon.
St Peter is a self portrait by William Morris, and St Paul with his broad flat-topped knife is by Ford Madox Brown. 
St Peter (WM 173a) was first used here at Middleton Cheney 1864-5 and 16 times thereafter; including St Nicholas Beaudesert Parish Church in Henley-in-Arden (1864-5 South nave window with 2 figures); All Saints Coddington 1865; All Saints church, Jesus Lane, Cambridge (E-window, 1866); St Andrew’s Minley, Hampshire (c1870 3-light window); Woolley, St Peter (South aisle W-window 1871). The St Peter cartoon was also used in a  3-tile panel, Peterhouse College (part of Cambridge University).

 St Paul was designed in June 1863 (53a) for Bradford Cathedral; it was also used here at Middleton Cheney; at Doddington c 1865; Henley in Arden 1865; Guernsey 1870; Meole Brace 1871.
 
St Austin and St Catherine are by William Morris. The St Catherine cartoon (WM332) and was used at Middleton Cheney (1865), Coddington (1865), All Saints, Jesus Lane Cambridge (1866), Dedworth All Saints, near Windsor (1873).

Abraham and Moses are by Simeon Solomon.

Eve and the Virgin Mary are by William Morris. The William Morris Gallery at Walthamstow has a drawing: A8 Eve and The Virgin Cartoon, 1865, for Middleton Cheney, Northants., east window. Pencil and sepia. Paper size 2' 6" X 1' 10"

Mary Magdalene carrying her perfume bottle is by William Morris, and St John carrying a cup with a serpent is by Ford Madox Brown. St John was designed designed in June 1863 for Bradford Cathedral; it was also used here at Middleton Cheney; at Langton Green 1865-6; Llandaff Cathedral 1868; Farnham Royal 1868; Gosforth; Guernsey 1870.

St Alban is by Burne-Jones and St Agnes with her split-sleeved gown is by William Morris. (A 2-light Morris & Co window at Haywards Heath, dated post-1867, of St. Stephen; St. Alban was replaced by Cox & Barnard in 1987. It is not known if this was the same cartoon as at Middleton Cheney.) 

Morris also designed the oak and foliage backgrounds and Webb the crown and leaf borders.
