Genest Le Colimacon 818pc Preparations for the Wedding of the Sheriff of Tangier's Daughter by Josep Tapiro y Baro, 3ply, 32x46cm, line-cut & push-fit. Snail signature whimsy.
It is a medium-large jigsaw by Genest cut in 2020 as a stack of two, and mine is the lower one. The extensive & accurate line-cutting is what makes it difficult. During the endgame I couldn't shake off the feeling that there just weren't enough pieces left and some must be missing!

Josep Tapiró i Baró (1836-1913), the first painter from the Iberian Peninsula to settle in Tangier, was a direct witness and recorder of the extraordinary urban and cultural transformation of this city, where he lived from 1876 until his death. He showed a special mastery of watercolour technique, receiving numerous awards and recognitions for his work.

He studied under the painter Domènec Soberano in Reus, then at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, in Madrid and Rome in 1867, where he met Mariano Fortuny, José Villegas Cordero and other Spanish artists.

After his first trip to Tangier in 1871, accompanied by his friend Mariano Fortuny, Bernardo Ferrándiz and Georges Clairin, he began to capture Moroccan scenes with great enthusiasm. In 1875 he painted The Orchard of the Golden Apples and The Arab Piper, two of his most famous works. After Fortuny's death he settled permanently in Tangier, in 1876 until his own death in 1913 (with only a brief stay in Spain between 1907 and 1908).
