            The beauty of these windows has been dimmed because trees have grown up outside and it is now seen more with reflected than transmitted light. This allows us to examine aspects of the windows that we are not usually aware of and to photograph it in the context of the surrounding stone.

The silver lining is that when the sun shines strongly the windows blaze into life - a sort of man-made rainbow - and a reminder that beauty cannot be properly appreciated without contrast.

The window was made in 1911 by Morris & Co from a design of Burne-Jones. It was first used in 1892 at Ashton-under-Lyne. It shows St Mark and includes his symbol a winged-lion - adopted by Venice and  familiar to everyone who has ever visited that beautiful, once powerful and glorious, then faded and decadent, now sinking city.
