Sunrise on the Lake Constance - a photo on Flickriver

Konstanz is one of the very seldom german city to be intact with its historical part.

Konstanz eascaped the allied bombs thank the adjacent swiss Kreuzlingen. The inhabitants from Konstanz were clever enough to leave the lights on while bombers flied over the city, so they could not exactly know were was the limit between the neutral Switzerland and Germany during WW2.

But, it is a nice compensation from History, even it comes late. Some decades after the problematic Councile of Constance, Konstanz tried to leave the Holly Empire to join the swiss revolution against the Empire. Sadly for Konstanz, the mountain regions were frightened to be overwhelmed by the cities. Around 1500, all the mountain valleys between Gotthard and the Adige proclaimed their independance, grounding Free Raetia. The Empire reacted massively. Konstanz was enrolled in the Schwaben Liga. Several armies converged toward Raetia and their swiss allieds. Sadly for Konstanz, the Germans loosed all battles, without any exception. Even, the united forces from south and Nordtirol were defeated together with two imperial armies in the upper Adige valley. Konstanz loosed many people and all its territories south of the Lake Constance.

So, it is a kind of justice to have escaped thank Switzerland during WW2

The relations are good and have mostly been so. Despite the heavy fightings during the roman antiquity, this region, also Switzerland and the former roman provinces of Raetia 1 and 2 were never invaded AND colonized. Too many roman counter-offensives. The Allemans came as refugees at the beginning of the 6th century after they lost a big battle against the Francs from Clovis  and they lived peaceful together.
