The Good, The Bad, and The Dead - a photo on Flickriver

            The picture shows three zones in the marsh at Lake St Clair Metropark. The "Good" are the native cattails in the foreground; the "Bad" are the Phragmites in the middle ground; and, the "Dead" are most of the Cottonwood trees in the background.

The park has made many efforts to extirpate the invasive Phragmites. They are an attractive reed, but they are a non-native species which spread very quickly, crowding out native species (the cattails in this case).

The "Dead" Cottonwoods in the background appear to have white trunks because they have no bark. Cottonwoods are very tolerant of wet conditions, but extreme rainfall last year left the trees standing in water for most of the year. (My yard also flooded most of the spring and summer.)
