Flickriver

Budville, a small community in Cubero NM was founded in 1928 by H.N. “Bud” Rice as a service station and trading post along this isolated part of Route 66. Bud and his wife, Aurora "Flossie" Rice, ran a successful towing business here. Rice also operated a small grocery store, pawn shop, gas station, wrecker service, salvage yard, and repair garage all from here. He also sold bus tickets, owned the local State Motor Vehicle Department concession, and was elected as a local Justice of the Peace. Seems Bud definitely had the monopoly here! On the Saturday evening of 18th. November 1967, 54 year old Bud Rice and his 82 year old employee Blanche Brown were murdered during a robbery of the trading post. Budville then became known as Bloodville. No-one was ever found guilty of their murders, although arrests were made and a trial took place in Valencia County. Flossie with her new husband, Max Atkinson continued to run the trading post until Max Atkinson was killed in a fight in 1973, dying just 3 feet from where Bud had died in 1967.Flossie continued on to run the trading post alone for until 1979 when the doors finally closed good. The place was eventually sold and was due to re-open in 2006 but it never happened. You can read more about the murders, arrests and trial here
